VIENNA, Jun 13 (PRIME) -- Russian gas giant Gazprom is discussing restart of the South Stream gas pipeline project with Austria’s OMV, Der Standard reported on Tuesday, citing its sources.
In December 2014, Russia decided to construct Turkish Stream, a gas pipeline that could run to the Turkey–Greece border to replace South Stream supposed to carry Russian gas to Europe bypassing Ukraine, cancelled partially on E.U. request.
According to sources cited by the newspaper, Austria can join the project as the second stage of Turkish Stream begins.
“On the second stage, doubling of the Turkish Stream’s potential is considered. OMV thinks that Russian gas of the second line of Turkish Stream will go along the pipeline systems of Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Austria to the Baumgarten hub. According to our information, Gazprom is ready to sell the gas to OMV,” Der Standard reported.
The plan is top-secret because its fulfillment can have a political fallout.
